Group Work:
(From the Heroes and Cool Kids Training Manual)
You belong to a group where you are born...your family. Then there are friends, classes, clubs, teams, church, political and community...and groups that you serve in the process of personal growth and development. Groups, however, are fluid and ever-changing and that includes their aims, their membership and their interpersonal relations and dynamics.
Still, groups which are a powerful forum through which to observe human behavior and interaction among members are also a conduit for the development of interpersonal skills, problem solving, a framework of information and good decision making.
As student leaders it is necessary to have a basic understanding of small group dynamics, and as facilitators you have a tremendous opportunity to engage young people at work with them in your respective communities.
Through this process you can help young people to examine personal and group behaviors, and issues and choices that exist in their lives to help them establish and pursue personal and group goals. As a leader you can model the positive behaviors and decisions necessary for success not only in athletics but in life as well.
